62.5% of voters choose de-amalgamation   more at https://perambuler.ramin.com.au/2022/01/the-inner-west-votes-to-deamalgamate.html Inner West Council de-amalgamation cost benefit report Friday 3 September 2021 Inner West Council is asking the community for feedback on an independent de-amalgamation cost benefit report. Recently, the NSW Parliament passed legislation that made it possible for Councils to put forward a business case for de-amalgamation. It remains at the discretion of the Local Government Minister whether to de-amalgamate councils. At the Local Government elections on 4 December 2021, Inner West citizens will be asked whether to support separating the one Inner West Council into the three original councils of Ashfield, Leichhardt and Marrickville. The Inner West votes to Deamalgamate

Image
On December 4, the Inner West Council put a Poll question to the electorate alongside the election of new councillors. Though the vote is not binding on council the result was a clear message. The Poll Question:  In May 2016, Ashfield, Leichhardt and Marrickville councils were amalgamated into one local government area by the State Government. Do you support the Inner West local government area being de-amalgamated, so as to restore the former local government areas of Ashfield, Leichhardt and Marrickville? Voter Turnout: 80.73% Informal Rate: 2.55% Results are available at https://vtr.elections.nsw.gov.au/LG2101/inner-west/results A cost benefit analysis was prepared and a yes and no case were distributed to every voter and translated into various languages. From Council Website: At the election, Inner West citizens will also be asked: “In May 2016, Ashfield, Leichhardt and Marrickville councils were amalgamated into one local government are...

Council Resolves to Run a Poll on the Amalgamation

Image
So, last night was a win for democracy - Inner West Council resolved to ask the community whether we continue with the amalgamation or deamalgamate to our former boundaries.     Outside Ashfield Town Hall, prior to Council Meeting, 24 May 2021   Recent NSW legislation permits deamalgamation to be initiated within 10 years of Amalgamation.   The NSW Electoral Commission (who is running the council election on September 4) advises:    "The deadline for referendum and poll questions is the 30th of June. ..A Poll question in non binding."   So, it is time to reflect on the good, bad and ugly of the amalgamation. Ofcourse some things would have happened without amalgamation and other things did not happen or happened because of amalgamation. Some things can be fixed - others can't.   There were 7 speakers at last night's extraordinary meeting and the gallery was full. The passing community also took an interest in the rally at the front of the ...

Rates Harmonisation Extraordinary Council Meeting 23 Feb 2021

Image
4 motions were put forward at tonight's extraordinary council meeting and none were resolved. This reflected the challenge we are facing in harmonising rates.   Over January, the community overwhelmingly rejectied the proposal to introduce new min rates of $850/$820.   Tonight Greens proposed that we recognise this rejection and defer Harmonisation until after we run a referendum on the amalgamation at the elections in September.   Moved Porteous/Hesse That Council: Notes the significant community opposition to the proposal for rates “harmonisation" Notes that Community Consultation overwhelmingly rejects the minimum rates tabled in point 3 of the Council officer’s recommendation (Minimum rates $850 residential/$820 business). Recognises that the inherent unfairness of this “rates harmonization” process which results in the benefit of lower rates to some residents being at the cost of higher rates to others. Notes that the only fair way to proceed is to remove...
