Last Tuesday was the third meeting of the new Council. We are now meeting once a month and Labor is also seeking to shut down debate.  It was done more subtly at this meeting than the last, but the chair only called and recognised alternate speakers for and against, before putting the motion.  After hearing from three passionate speakers , all councillors supported my ALGA Motion - Yes to the Circular Economy No to Incinerators . Last night's  council meeting was a demonstration of why we need fortnightly Council meetings and proper reports presented for consideration by Council. Non-urgent Mayoral Minutes were put up which sought to establish Council Positions despite containing no comments from Council Officers. Insufficient information in an illegible format was published. Councillors were informed they were voting on Domestic Waste Services on which they were briefed but with no supporting report. The mayor as chair of the meeting and claiming to be an expert on Meeting procedure kept throwing to officers for rulings. It was good to see so many speakers at the meeting - but this should not have been the first time Councillors heard their arguments! So, Inner West Council met online for an Extraordinary Council meeting last night. There was only one item on the Agenda a Mayoral Minute but we did debate that and there was some consultation before hand. The final version was not available until after 6pm. The Mayoral Minute included pushing back the 14 April Ordinary Council Meeting to 21 April (to allow staff to provide reports). As per the special covid-19 regulations , the meeting was live streamed but no opportunity for the public to address the council - though this would be quite possible, for pre-registered speakers and the public can still email councillors.
