Background
Nina Gbor (ecostyles): "We recently had Joanna visit our office. Joanna received the Young Creator of the Year Award for demonstrating strong creativity and leadership through her self-initiated school club, Passion for Fashion Fridays. She mentors younger students in upcycling textiles into functional and stylish art pieces. Her commitment to sustainability and community engagement underpins her long-term goal of opening a business that teaches others to repurpose clothing into meaningful, eco-friendly creations".... https://www.ecostyles.com.au/blogs/policies-and-initiatives-to-help-save-the-australian-fashion-industry-for-future-generations (viewed 22 Sep 2025, 18.04)
Australia Institute: "Textiles waste in Australia Reducing consumption and investing in circularity Every year, over 300,000 tonnes of clothing is either sent to landfill or exported from Australia. To respond to the growing textiles waste problem, the Commonwealth has proposed policies intended to create a ‘circular economy.’ However, a genuinely circular economy depends on drastically reducing the rate at which textiles are produced and consumed, banning the export of textiles waste, and investing in Australia’s capacity to manufacture and recycle better alternatives domestically." ...https://australiainstitute.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/The-Australia-Institute-Textiles-Waste-In-Australia-Web.pdf (viewed 22 Sep 2025, 16.47)

Kirsten, CEO of Reverse Garbage(RG) in 2025, & RG 1975 Truck collecting Industrial Offcuts (Waste) |
Reverse Garbage Co-opTurns 50 - from Fires to Floods
- Truck – collected waste from factories providing resources for Teachers
- Manufacturing came to an end but word got out and post retail and consumer products were donated providing resources for theatre sets, costumes, Artists and Mardis Gras floats
- Fire – before plastic and Lithium batteries caught fire in 2025! The Casula Powerhouse was decommissioned in 1976. It's red-cedar chimneys built in 1955 to avoid soiling neigbours washing, caught fire and were brought down. Reverse Garbage's premises were burnt down - word had got out of storage of highly flammable items. But members discovered only a burnt out building after driving their van, to Addison road to pay their membership dues.
What will Reverse Garbage's role be over the next 50 years as we tackle post-retail and post-consumer waste?
