FOGO Rollout to Single Dwellings

Pioneer Park, 7 October 2023

Lots on big picture and we can do our little bit.

NSW is running out of Landfill sites into which we can tip our garbage and it is piling up.

Much of this garbage is a valuable resource, if we can extract it.

This is the reason for FOGO rollout to 48,000 houses across the Inner West.

The NSW state government has awarded us a grant of nearly a million dollars to
help our community and council make this transition.

NSW Environment Protection Authority Go FOGO grants

Category: Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy Amounts: total pool up to $46 million
Eligible bodies: NSW Councils Contact: organics.grants@epa.nsw.gov.au or info@epa.nsw.gov.au
Status: Round 2 closes at 4pm, 10 October 2023 Managed by: NSW Environment Protection Authority
Aims Go FOGO grants support NSW councils to deliver new weekly food only (FO) or food organics and garden organics (FOGO) services to their communities. These may be households that currently have no kerbside organics bin service or households with only a garden waste collection.

Two grant rounds are planned for each year for four years starting in the second half of 2022. The objectives of the Go FOGO grants are to:

support the effective rollout of weekly FOGO (or FO) services to 500,000 households that have no organics service
support the effective rollout of weekly FOGO (or FO) services to 1,500,000 households that have a garden only waste service
provide additional support to councils with a significant number of multi-unit dwellings (MUDs) to deliver additional tailored communication to these properties.

Eligible organisations: All NSW councils who have not received funding via Go FOGO, are eligible to apply for funding to roll out new weekly FOGO services or FO services to households that do not currently have a service. The service must be active within three years of the grant application approval.Councils who have previously received funding under the Waste Less Recycle More organics collections grants are eligible to apply for funding to deliver new services only to households not covered by the previous funding.

Following the assessment and approval process, successful applicants are expected to be notified in late 2023....https://www.epa.nsw.gov.au/working-together/grants/organics-infrastructure-fund/go-fogo-grants

It is hoped we can extract 7,000 tonnes of food and garden
waste from the Red lid garbage(land fill) bin to FOGO Green Bin.

This will save 14,700 tonnes CO2 equivalent (from landfill anaerobic
breakdown of food and garden material as CH4 methane a major greenhouse
gas causing climate change)

In 21/22 Inner West council collected 38,500 tonnes in Red Bin (garbage). If we can  do this as a community, through Council, we will save $370,000 savings in disposal fees.

The aim is to move 7,000 tonnes out of the RED bin into the GREEN bin
for trucked to Forbes to create compost fertiliser for farming our food.

Any container can be used in the kitchen to collect scraps which are then tipped into Green top Wheelie bin.

This Green top Wheelie bin will now be collected weekly (a change for those who already had a Green (garden waste) bin.

On the big picture, according to Australia's Minister for the Environment Tanya Plebersek's department.

  • Food waste[age] costs the Australian economy around $36.6 billion each year.
  • Each year Australians waste around 7.6 million tonnes of food across the food supply chain. This equals about 312kg per person and can cost up to $2,500 per household per year.
  • Food waste accounts for about 3% of Australia’s annual greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Australia uses around 2,600 giga litres of water to grow food that is wasted. This equals the volume of water in 5 Sydney Harbours.
  • The amount of land used to grow wasted food in Australia covers more than 25 million hectares. This is a landmass larger than the state of Victoria.
  • As a sector, households generate the most food waste in Australia and are responsible for about 30% of the total. This equals around 2.5 million tonnes per year.

Think Global act locally.

Aim for Inner West to move 7,000 tonnes of food and garden waste  into Green bins leaving 31,500 tonnes in the Red Bin over 23/24.

But we also have to tackle any wastage of food and work towards only Food Scraps into Green Bin and avoid food wastage, by not buying too much. And eat yummy leftovers.
