Singapore-Goa-Banglore Laneways

We admired the Hotel 81 Rocher Art Deco building and spiral staircase, only to learn on a tour of NUS Baba Heritage House, that these were constructed in return for giving up land for laneways.

The buildings once extended over the land which was resumed to build laneways for the "night soil collectors"

The deep long houses were cut in half by the laneways and in the case of the NUS Baba house, the part of the property for servants was  sold off.

The laneway has become a wonderful oasis free of cars which fill the front yards of the heritage homes.
