Summer 2019/20 Swims

LPAC have extended our pool open times so you can enjoy some late laps and a sunset swim during the summer period.

Commencing on the first Friday of summer and running to the last Friday of summer the following changes will be made to pool closing times:

Mushroom pool will stay open to the public until 7pm
Olympic Pool will stay open to the public until 9pm

Motion:

THAT a review of the opening times of swimming pools and other facilities at the Aquatic Centres including extending (or shortening) the season and hours be undertaken and a report be brought back to Council.

Report

At the 12 March 2019 Council meeting, Council resolved to run a trial of keeping a pool open for water polo training from 8.00pm-9.00pm.

Personal Fitness was identified as number 4 and Swimming was identified as number 7 in the recreation needs study (see below).

Many people work long hours and being able to go down to the pool for a swim on the way home would be a nice way to wind down or start the day.

Air pollution is often poor in Sydney and possibly worse in the Inner West, which means it may not be safe for sensitive people to exercise outdoors.

With increasing temperatures there is an growing need for places to cool down.

The Aquatic Centres incorporate Pools, Gyms, Cafes and other community facilities which may not currently fit into the schedules of a large portion of our community.

Checked out White's Creek Catchment in the rain with a few long time residents including an 82 year old who was born at the Private Hospital where the Leichhardt Bolo is and moved to where she lives now when she was 1. She has seen a few changes and people come and go.    Ferris Lane looked fabulous!    The new lintel in Ferris Street seemed to be working well - residents have worked with council to make this happen along with cleaning out nearby drains and gutters.   Evan Jones Playground had a tree down. And a few other trees need mulching.

Len and Dilys Williams and the Hunter Baillie Presbyterian Church

The Rev. Leonard Mervyn Williams and his wife Dilys came to the Hunter Baillie in 1956. The church was in decline and the threat of falling masonry had made it impossible to obtain public liability insurance. (p39, Hunter Baillie ) Dilys conducted alternate services at Leichhardt and Hunter Baillie Presbyterian churches with her husband and was inducted, in 1969, as the first woman Elder in NSW. (p41, Hunter Baillie ). Ferguson Library Archivist mentioned in her talk at the church on 4 September 2010, that Dilys Williams in the 1930s had applied to the Presbyterian Church of Australia General Assembly to be Accepted as a candidate for the Ministry. Her application was "laid on the table" and was never dealt with. The stained glass window on the northern side of the church was restored in memory of the Williams' time at the church.
